The Research Behind Our Mission
Climate change is reshaping environmental exposures and, in turn, human health. Air pollution, extreme heat, and other climate‑exacerbated hazards affect nearly every organ system and drive disproportionate burdens of chronic disease and premature mortality. Our program was created to rigorously investigate these pathways and to translate evidence into equitable, scalable solutions. Grounded in methodological excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration across Population Health Sciences (DPHS), the Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE), Sociology, and Design Climate, we train scholars to connect mechanisms, contexts, and interventions—so that scientific insight becomes real‑world impact.
At the core of our approach are three pillars:
- Mechanisms: We examine how climate‑related exposures (e.g., particulate matter, ozone, heat) interact with physiology across the life course to influence cardiometabolic, respiratory, neurological, and aging outcomes.
- Context & Outcomes: We analyze how social structures, geography, and systems produce unequal exposure and outcome distributions, and how measurement and data infrastructure can accurately capture those disparities.
- Solutions: We design and evaluate technical, behavioral, and policy interventions—at individual and systems levels—using implementation science and design thinking to maximize adoption, effectiveness, and sustainability.
Why This Work Matters
The impacts of climate change on health are large, growing, and unevenly distributed. Air pollution remains a leading environmental risk factor for premature death globally, and heat interacts synergistically with poor air quality to magnify risks for vulnerable populations. Beyond acute events, climate‑driven disruptions ripple through social, economic, and health systems—affecting access to care, occupational safety, food security, and community resilience. Addressing these challenges requires scholars who can:
- Integrate evidence across disciplines—from atmospheric chemistry and exposure science to epidemiology, demography, and health services research.
- Quantify and explain disparities—linking multi‑level social determinants to measured outcomes with appropriate methods (e.g., causal inference, multilevel modeling, qualitative inquiry).
- Design interventions that people and institutions will adopt—pairing rigorous evaluation with stakeholder engagement and product/solution development.
Our faculty and fellows bring deep expertise in climate modeling, exposure assessment, health impact analysis, advanced statistical methods, and implementation science. Students benefit from an academic community that values methodological rigor, cross‑unit collaboration, and real‑world translation—so graduates can lead in academia, public health, industry, and policy.
The Gap in Current Education Models
Traditional graduate training is often siloed: climate science programs may emphasize physical systems without sustained training in health measurement and implementation; public health programs may focus on epidemiology and policy without deep engagement with atmospheric processes or engineering innovation; social science programs may excel at modeling inequality and life‑course dynamics but lack embedded pathways to turn findings into deployable solutions.
Our program closes these gaps by:
- Structuring truly cross‑unit training: Certificate requirements include at least one course in each core unit (DPHS, NSOE, Sociology, Design Climate) plus a semester‑long Collaboratory seminar, ensuring breadth and integration without extending time‑to‑degree.
- Pairing methods with application: Coursework is complemented by experiential learning (Design Climate/CFCI engagements, DPHS Summer Institute workshops, Bass Connections, Muser, Data+), where students move from analysis to prototyping, stakeholder discovery, and implementation planning.
- Building a scholar community: Biweekly Collaboratory meetings and working groups foster co‑authorship, shared data resources, and interdisciplinary mentorship—creating the continuity and social infrastructure that most programs leave to chance.
In short, we offer a methodologically focused, solutions‑oriented pathway that aligns climate and health research with the realities of adoption, scale, and equity.
