Apply to the Climate & Health Certificate

Benefits: Earn an interdisciplinary credential at the intersection of climate change, environmental exposures, and human health – without extending time‑to‑degree.

Eligibility: Duke graduate and professional students pursuing a PhD or master’s degree from any department or school.

Program requirements: Students must complete three interdisciplinary courses and one semester of the fall collaboratory seminar course for credit. Students may also choose to participate in additional programs, activities, and events; these opportunities are optional and do not count toward required coursework. Application Materials: As part of the application process, you will be asked to respond to these questions.

1. Please describe your research or professional interests. (approximately 200 words)
2. The IMPACT Climate and Health certificate framework integrates population health, design, environmental science, and sociology.  In relation to this approach, please describe how your participation in the Climate and Health Certificate Program will help you achieve your professional goals. (approximately 200 words)
3. Please describe how your research or professional experiences, skill sets and/or perspectives could contribute to the interdisciplinary community of the Climate and Health certificate program. (approximately 200) words)
4. Have you already taken courses, done research or have practical or professional experience that are applicable to the certificate? If so, please list them here and briefly describe how they connect to the certificate.

Apply to be an IMPACT Scholar (PhD Funding & Certificate)

Benefits: In addition to enrollment in the Climate & Health Certificate, IMPACT Scholars receive two academic years of funding plus a summer of support, along with structured interdisciplinary training focused on climate and health – without extending time‑to‑degree.

Eligibility: Rising 2nd and 3rd year PhD students.

Program requirements: Scholars must complete three interdisciplinary courses, plus two semesters of the collaboratory seminar course for credit. Additionally, scholars are expected to participate in summer activities and interdisciplinary projects. Scholars will be expected to incorporate interdisciplinary perspectives of climate and health into their dissertation research. Learn more about the requirements on the Program page.

Application materials: As part of your fellowship application, you will asked to provide the name of a faculty reference, a transcript*, and a resume or CV. You will also be asked to provide a brief response for the following questions:

1. Please describe your research or professional interests. (approximately 200 words)
2. How do you envision incorporating IMPACT scholar activities and perspectives into your dissertation research? (approximately 200 words)
3. Please describe how your research or professional experiences, skill sets and/or perspectives could contribute to the interdisciplinary community of the Climate and Health certificate program. (approximately 200) words)
4. Have you already taken courses, done research or have practical or professional experience that are applicable to the certificate? If so, please list them here and briefly describe how they connect to the certificate.

Applications for the IMPACT Scholar fellowships are due on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Apply to be an IMPACT Summer Scholar

Benefits: Summer Scholars receive summer financial support; participate in IMPACT summer meetings and training activities; have opportunities to connect with full‑year IMPACT Scholars and faculty; and are eligible to take select workshops or Summer Institute offerings.

Eligibility: Duke PhD students at any stage

Program Requirements: Summer Scholars must participate in summer activities and complete one semester of the collaboratory seminar course for credit. Learn more about the requirements on the Program page.

IMPACT Summer Scholars fellowships will be selected for summer 2027. Applications will open in spring 2027.
